Latest Information
Dear Families,
We wanted to thank you for giving us the opportunity to spend quality time with your child. It is great to see young people take an interest in performing, which allows us to enrich, engage and entertain their love of the arts.
According to Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement, as a nation, we are reaching a collective understanding that all students benefit from the opportunity to learn about and experience the arts. The study, published by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, found that the arts in its many forms is increasingly accepted as an essential part of achieving success in school, work and life.
The study highlighted the following main skills acquired through participation in the arts:
THINKING SKILLS
- Thinking skills (sometimes referred to as cognitive skills) is a broad term that refers to the operation of various thought processes. Reasoning ability, intuition, perception, imagination, inventiveness, creativity, problem-solving skills and expression are among the thought processes associated with study of the arts.
SOCIAL SKILLS
- Certain arts activities promote growth in positive social skills, including self-confidence, self-control, conflict resolution, collaboration, empathy and social tolerance. Research evidence demonstrates these benefits apply to all students, not just the gifted and talented. The studies demonstrate the arts can play a key role in developing social competencies.
MOTIVATION TO LEARN
- The arts nurture a motivation to learn by emphasizing active engagement, disciplined and sustained attention, persistence and risk taking, among other competencies. Participation in the arts also is an important strategy for engaging and motivating students in learning.
Performing arts, like any talent, must be nurtured and practiced consistently to ensure the best possible results. We suggest they participate in any school or community program available, such as drama, chorus and/or band. We also offer more in-depth training during the school year through our weekly production ensemble classes or private instruction, if interested.
Sincerely,
Cynthia O’Brien
Artistic Director
